We had two wonderful guest speakers at our April meeting- Christine Triebsch and Jon Ossoff!
Christine is the democratic candidate for the 32nd State Senate district and Jon Ossoff is the democratic candidate for the 6th US Congressional district. Both Democrats garnered the most votes for their respective race in primary on the 18th of this month. Christine’s election is May 16th and Jon’s election is June 20th.
We also had Gabe Shippy from Young Democrats of Georgia come speak about the YDG convention at the beginning of the month and the importance of building local chapters. If you aren’t a member yet, don’t worry! You can join by clicking that membership tab at the top of the site. Interested in helping us build a Kennesaw State University chapter? Email our parliamentarian Stephanie Hankinson at firstname.lastname@example.org for ways to help. If high school is more your speed, email our treasurer Lewis Polay to get involved.

From left to right: Treasurer Lewis Polay, Parliamentarian Stephanie Hankinson, Vice President Justin Holsomback, President Matt Southwell, and Secretary Rachel Paule! Congratulations to the new board, everyone is looking forward to a great year building on last year’s work to not only keep Cobb blue, but to make it even bluer and spread that wonderful color throughout Georgia!

So, we had another GREAT meeting this week! Turnout continues to impress – not sure what exactly it is, but SOMETHING has definitely motivated the Democrats to take action, and we’re glad to see so many people fired up! Our officer elections went pretty quickly – the entire slate was unopposed, so it was just a quick unanimous vote to approve the new board (pictured above), and then we got to hear from a number of candidates running for both State Senate District 32 and US House District 6! Thank you so much to Exton Howard, Christine Triebsch, Ragin Edwards, and Rebecca Quigg for attending, and thank you to the Jon Ossoff campaign for having a speaker present to talk with us!
(Quick reminder: while we are always grateful for candidates coming to speak with us, we are expressly forbidden by our bylaws from endorsing any candidate when there are multiple Democrats in the race. That being said, if members find that certain candidates fit their idea of what’s best for our community and want to volunteer with or work on campaigns, we highly encourage you to do so! We’ve included links to every campaign’s website in the minutes for you to research and, if interested, sign up!)
Lastly we had a quick overview of some upcoming events, both here in Cobb and in our neighboring areas. You can find dates, times, locations, and Facebook links for the upcoming events in our minutes!
If you haven’t realized yet, we highly recommend you check those minutes out.
The new officers are currently working on scheduling our next meeting, which is tentatively set for April 20th – location to be determined. Nothing against Keegan’s – we love you, your food is amazing, your drinks are wonderful, and your staff is lovely – but we just want to find something more centrally located in Cobb County to make it easier for North Cobb residents to attend. We appreciate your patience as we identify a new venue for our next meeting!
Keep your eyes on the website and the Facebook page for more info as it becomes available, and remember, VOTE BLUE!
Good evening, everyone! We had a great meeting tonight with excellent turnout! Thanks so much to everyone for coming! Special thanks go to current Young Democrats of Georgia President Sarah Zibanejadrad Beeson, candidate for Marietta City Council Chris Walker, and candidate for US House of Representatives in Georgia’s 6th District Jon Ossoff for coming and speaking to the group!
Here are the minutes for the meeting. Feel free to review at your leisure. Major items to note:

We’ll see you all in March!]]>
First off, sorry about the lack of updates – the Board has been incredibly busy over the past year. Between running the chapter, working on campaigns, and coping with the results of the election over the holidays, we haven’t had as much time as we’d like to keep the site updated. It’s a bit more difficult than updating the Facebook page.
But we are officially back up and running now. As you’ve no doubt noticed, our next meeting is scheduled for February 16th at Keegan’s Pub in Smyrna. So far we’ve got some pretty incredible interest, so we hope to pack the room!
As far as membership goes, it’s about time to renew. Full disclosure: due to the fact that the chapter is rebuilding, we had some trouble accessing the previous membership registration signups. We have resolved that issue through some creative computer wizardry, so we do have up to date records of all signups over the past year. We’ll be emailing everyone whose membership has expired or is expiring soon to let them know, as well as emailing out to the new sign ups to confirm their membership.
So – what does this mean for all of us?
Right now, it means we have all the tools we need to get this chapter up and running at full speed to join the fight in Georgia and across the nation to resist the Trump administration and build a network to support local candidates in Cobb County in 2018.
As for the nominations for the next Board taking place in two weeks and the elections in March, we will be discussing the process for that at the February meeting. It may or may not be open to members only. We have not yet settled on that. It’s likely that, to encourage participation in the group, all will be welcome. But, with that being said, we would love to have you as a member. We are currently sorting out the sign up for that, and I will post an update here as soon as that is up.
Thank you all for your patience as the rebuilding continues, and thank you for standing with us in defense of women, refugees, the LGBT community, people of color, the disabled, liberals, progressives – and every other group Donald Trump has angered over the past couple years.
Secretary, Young Democrats of Cobb County

The 2016-2017 Young Democrats of Cobb Executive Board
This past weekend was the Young Democrats of Georgia Convention in Augusta! The Cobb chapter was represented by Deja and Matt, and we got a lot done while there! From seminars and workshops on chapter building and advocacy to lots of networking with chapters from around the state, it was a very productive weekend! The new state-level board was elected, further details can be found here. But a very special shout out to our own Deja Frederick who has been elected as the YDG National Committee Woman!
